Valence electrons are the most exposed of all the electrons, necessarily acting as a protective barrier for the rest of the atom. Considering as the highest energy level, they are mostly involved in chemical reactions as they’re the easiest to transfer. Water is an example of how valence electrons work. Iodine configuration: Kr 4d10 5s2 5p5. Nitrogen can get a full outer shell by getting three electrons from Aluminum or Gallium. It can also get a full outer shell from three Sodium or Potassium. When naming molecular compounds prefixes are used to dictate the number of a given element present in the compound.
